Shopping for wine in the metropolitan Washington area:

But there are a number of more intimate places that feature a smaller number of wines selected by the store’s wine buyers.  In the District’s Cleveland Park Wine & Spirits, Tony Quinn and Greg will guide you through their well-chosen selections.  In Vienna, Virginia, at Out of Site Wines, Steve and Michael have their special selections of good wines.  There are of course many more.  The key is to find a place or three in which you come to trust the recommendations of the wine people, who in turn come to know your particular preferences.

Washington DC has large wine shops with wide selections, such as Calvert Woodley or MacArthur Beverages.   In Virginia, Total Wine stores have enormous selections.

Twisted Vines.  2803 Columbia Pike, Arlington, Virginia.  This bottle shop and bistro opened on March 2.  It has a small but excellent and carefully chosen selection of wines, available both for retail sale and for purchase for drinking at Twisted Vines.  The great deal here is that any wine bought for drinking here is the retail price plus $15 corkage,  vastly less than what it would cost at most restaurants.  There is a nice selection of wines by the glass, with selected flights of three wines.  But for two or more people, you’re far better off buying by the bottle.  I have done a number of wine tastings here.  I highly recommend stopping by Twisted Vines.
